Junior Ty Smith's goal in the 92nd minute lifted the Hiram Terriers to a 1-0 overtime victory over Denison on Saturday at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
Denison had a chance to score the game's first goal when rookie Corey Ricketts settled a through ball deep in DU's offensive third. However, the freshman lifted his shot well over the crossbar and out of play. A minute later, senior Chris Olson unleashed a shot that rung off the crossbar and out of play. After 45 minutes of play the game remained scoreless. Hiram held a slight 9-7 edge in shots, while DU outcornered the Terriers 8-0 in the first half.
In the second period, both teams unloaded shots in search of the first score. In the 80th minute, Hiram's Brian Zilla sent a header towards the Big Red goal off a corner kick from Ryan Greenhill. However, Zilla's shot attempt was turned aside by DU goalie Matt Wagner.
In the 88th minute, Olson and freshman defender Andrew Vance each had a chance to put the Big Red on top. Olson's shot attempt hit the right post and stayed in play. With the Hiram keeper out of position, Vance released a shot that was kept out of the goal by Terrier defender Tyler Launder.
In the 92nd minute, Ryan Greenhill fired a shot from well outside the 18-yard box that was blocked down. However, the initial shot rolled through the box and found Smith. The junior settled the ball and buried a shot into the lower right 90 for the win.
Olson and Ricketts paced the Big Red attack with three shots each, while Vance and senior Ben Peek each logged two attempts. Wagner made three saves for Denison, while Joe Rottinger played the entire match in goal for Hiram.
The Big Red drops to 8-7-2 overall and 4-5 in the league, while Hiram improves to 10-5-1 on the year and 5-4 in the NCAC.
