GRANVILLE, Ohio-- No. 20 Washington and Lee scored nine unanswered goals, stunning No. 10 Denison, 15-11 in the 2017 season opener from Piper Stadium.
Denison entered the third quarter with 7-5 lead after a pair of first half goals by Will Donohue and Spencer Butler. With the score 8-6, in favor of the Big Red, Liam Rooney found Donohue for his third goal of the contest with 8:25 left in the third. Two minutes later, Butler notched the hat trick that lifted DU to a 10-6 advantage. With 2:35 remaining in the third, Owen Armstrong scored on a pass from Rooney, giving the Big Red a five-goal cushion but seconds later, W&L's Evans Allison scored to make it an 11-7 game heading into the fourth.
The Big Red opened the final quarter with a faceoff win but the ball was turned over on the clear attempt. The Generals took over and barely relinquished possession the remainder of the period. The run was started by A.J. Witherell with 13:52 left. After a W&L faceoff win, Denison's Ben Duhoski was flagged for a slash. Fourteen seconds later, Jonathan Henry converted the EMO on a nice feed from Witherell.
The Generals took the ensuing faceoff but a save by Big Red goalie Will Howard got Denison in transition. After Josh Happ's successful clear, DU called timeout with hopes of stopping the bleeding. Out of the timeout, Armstrong's shot was saved by W&L goalie Nic Peterson, but Alison was penalized for interference and the ball was given back to Denison. With the 30 second man-up about to expire, Armstrong lost the ball and it was scooped up by Washington and Lee's Kyle Gifford with 10 minutes to play.
That sequence proved to be Denison's last meaningful offensive possession. The next 10 minutes were dominated by the Generals. Witherell and Sam Dardani both tallied hat tricks in the quarter as W&L played make it, take it lacrosse to leave Granville with the four-goal victory.
The visitors went 7-for-9 from the faceoff X in the final quarter while outshooting the Big Red 16-2. Dardani finished with five goals and one assist while Witherell added four goals and two assists. FOGO Jack Hodgson was 17-for-27 and led the way with 10 ground balls.
Denison was led by Butler and Donohue's three-goal efforts. Rooney scored one goal and had four assists. Armstrong finished with two goals while Happ and Wills Hutras rounded out the DU scoring.
Duhoski led the defense with seven ground balls and one caused turnover. Faceoff specialist Henry DeCamp was 12-for-27 and finished with four ground balls. Howard ended with 10 saves in his first collegiate start while Peterson saved nine for W&L.
The Big Red will look to rebound next Sunday when they travel to Salem, Va. for a 1 p.m. contest against Roanoke College.
