Senior close defenseman Spencer Riehl received a pair of honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. On Tuesday Riehl was named to the USILA Scholar All-American team and was picked to play in the USILA/LAXWORLD North-South Senior Game that will be played on May 24th.
Denison boasted the nation's No. 1 scoring defense this season, as they limited the opposition to just 5.25 goals per game. Another key piece to that stingy defense was Riehl who also earned first-team all-conference accolades after finishing second on the team in caused turnovers and fourth in ground balls. Riehl was a second-team All-NCAC pick in 2012 and earlier this month he was named to the 2013 NCAC All-Tournament team for his play in the semifinals against Kenyon and in the championship game against Ohio Wesleyan. Riehl will play for the South all-star team this Friday (May 24). The game will begin at 3 p.m. from Edith Robb Dixon Field on the campus of Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa. He is the 13th USILA Scholar All-American from Denison University. Riehl also is the third member of his family to suit up for the Big Red. His father, Tom, scored 69 career goals from 1982-85. His uncle, Mike played for Denison from 1979-82 and is fourth on the all-time scoring list with 121 career goals.
One of the winningest programs in the history of NCAA Division III lacrosse, Denison has made 20 NCAA Tournament appearances while winning 14 NCAC Championships. Since 1953 the program has logged 575 victories while posting a sparkling .701 winning percentage. In 20 seasons under the direction of head coach Mike Caravana, Denison has gone 208-81 (.719) with 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
