GALENA, Ohio -- After 54 holes of competition, the Denison men's golf team finished sixth at the 2017 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Series with a final team score of 936.
The second leg of the NCAC Men's Golf Championship Series was supposed to start on Saturday at Royal American Golf Course in Galena, Ohio. However, the heavy amounts of rain on Saturday shortened the two-weekend, 72-hole event to a 54-hole tournament.
Sophomore Knox Montgomery, who did not compete at last weekend's event in Meadville, Pa., turned in the lowest score for the Big Red with a 76 on Sunday. Senior Jonathan Taylor followed with a 79 on Sunday that helped him finish in a tie for 12th place after a three-round score of 230. Christian Early was tied for 21st for the event with a 237, while Guille Henegar's 238 landed him in a tie for 25th for the event. At the end of the round, Taylor was announced as a second-team All-NCAC honoree.
Wittenberg's Sam Stilwell and Cameron Willis finished the three-round tournament with matching scores of 218. That tie forced the two teammates into a playoff situation. After shooting matching scores on the first playoff hole, Stilwell won the second playoff hole to earn championship medalist honors.
Stilwell was also named NCAC Men's Golfer of the Year, while Willis was tabbed the NCAC's Newcomer of the Year. Wittenberg also won the team title with 878 strokes followed by Allegheny (918) and Kenyon (925).
