Scintillating second half pushes Denison past Capital

Denison erased a 17-point first half deficit on the road to defeat the Capital Crusaders, 87-82 on Thursday night.  The Big Red shot 59 percent in the second half and outscored the host Crusaders, 52-36 to complete the come-from-behind victory.

The Big Red got off to a bit of a sluggish start at the Capital Center on Thursday night.  With 10:10 to play in the first half, a dunk by Capital's Andew Bolka put his squad up 28-11.  Denison would regroup and go on a 5-0 run.  Over the remainder of the first half they would play Capital even, which resulted in a 46-35 halftime deficit.

In the opening minutes of the second half, junior Robby Weingart knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to get Denison to within seven. The tide would turn back in the favor of the Crusaders at the midway point of the second half after a Mike Augustine jumper put Capital up 67-55 with 10:39 to play.

Denison would proceed to go on a 16-1 game-changing run that would put the Big Red up 71-68 with 5:38 to play.  During that stretch, DU knocked down three, 3-point field goals and forced Capital into three turnovers.  The streak-capping dagger came from Brad Woolard who flared out beyond the arc and drilled a 3-pointer off a pass from Patrick Keller.

The resilient Crusaders would respond with an 8-3 run to take back the lead, 76-74, with 3:35 to play.  Unfazed, Denison's Darius White canned his third 3-pointer of the half to lift the Big Red back into the lead for good.  Down the stretch DU would lock up the game at the free throw line, going 10-for-14 over the final 2:45 of play.

Woolard led Denison with 21 points and and White followed with 18 points.  All five Denison starters were in double figures as Alex Longi followed with 13 points.  David Meurer scored 12 points and finished with six rebounds.  Nine of his 12 points came at the free throw stripe.  Rounding out the scoring for Denison was Keller with 10, and Weingart who finished with nine points and six boards off the bench.

Capital shot 53 percent for the game and outrebounded Denison 37-27.  Denison ended the night going 26-of-45 (.578) and were a red-hot 12-of-19 from 3-point range (.632).

Denison improves to 3-5 overall while Capital falls to 3-4.  The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (Dec. 14) when they host No. 13 Wittenberg at 3 p.m.
