Austin Fowler scored a game-high 21 points and David Thompson added 14 points and nine rebounds as Case Western Reserve handed Denison a 69-56 loss on Tuesday night in Granville.
The Spartans led by only five with 8:09 to play but they would go on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes, making a DU comeback attempt unlikely. A Jon Akpapunam 3-pointer with 2:02 to play made it a three possession game but DU would miss its next two attempts from long range, setting the final at 69-56.
Fowler was a force inside and out for Case. The 6'6" senior was 7-of-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. He also added two assists and three rebounds in 28 minutes. Thompson connected on six of his seven field goals while grabbing nine boards. Dane McLoughlin followed with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Denison was led by Dimonde Hale's 17 points and nine rebounds in 34 minutes. Alex Longi scored 11 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Akpapunam also chipped in 11 points in 27 minutes of action.
DU shot just 34 percent from the field (20-of-59) and was 5-of-21 from beyond the arc. Case Western Reserve connected on 51 percent of its attempts and was 6-for-18 from deep. Case held a 35-33 advantage on the glass.
Denison drops to 2-2 while Case improves to 2-1 on the year. The Big Red will return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 28) when they open North Coast Athletic Conference play against Hiram College at 8 p.m.
