Putting the "Red" back in Big Red

For years, the Denison football program has utilized various patterns and shades of navy blue on its uniforms, but second-year head football coach Jack Hatem plans to make one mighty big fashion statement when the Big Red suit up in 2011.

The Red and White will be back on full display, and Hatem and his team couldn't be happier.

"The uniform situation has been a priority for me since I accepted this position," stated Hatem. "I have alumni, students, parents and high school coaches asking me all the time about our uniforms. They are always asking 'where's the red?' A Division III budget doesn't allow us to completely change uniforms very often, but I knew we had to get back to our roots a bit with this change in our look. It's a significant representation of everything that we have been trying to do here over the last 18 months.

Out the door are the blue and white helmets, along with the stylized blue trim. Bye-bye to the trendy paint-by-number design. In conjunction with Nike, Denison has chosen to go with a modern, yet classic look. At both home and away contests the team will wear red helmets with a white interlocking "DU" logo on the side. The helmets will sport white facemasks and a single one-inch white stripe down the center of the helmet.

The home uniform is a solid red jersey with white tackle-twill numbers. Above the numbers reads a one-inch high "Denison" and white tackle-twill numbers are sewn on each sleeve. Senior wide receiver Lucas Graham (left) modeled the home uniform for the announcement.

White pants with a double red side stripes will be worn for both home and away games. On the left hip is the Nike "swoosh," and on the right is the same interlocking DU logo that appears on the helmet, only in red. On the back belt loop of the pants, "Big Red" is embroidered.

The road uniform will be a white jersey to match the white pants. The tackle-twill numbers appear in red along with the one-inch embroidered "Denison" that appears above the numbers. Senior defensive lineman Jerome Ray (right) donned the road uniform for this announcement.

The jerseys are made of four-way stretch woven twill that sheds moisture and strategically placed seams, pads and cooling zones also helps optimize protective coverage.

"We have made a significant effort to reach out to our alumni base. We want our team to look like the team they remember playing for. Most importantly, we want our alumni to be proud of the product that we put on the field each Saturday. We feel like we are making positive steps every day toward restoring the winning tradition of Denison football," Hatem explained.

Denison will debut their new look on September 3 when they travel to nearby Delaware, Ohio, for a 7 p.m. kickoff against rival Ohio Wesleyan University. The Big Red will play their first home game of 2011 on September 17 against Hiram College at 7 p.m. in Piper Stadium.
