WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The 27th-ranked Denison baseball team picked up a convincing 9-1 victory over regional foe Otterbein on Wednesday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field.
Freshman Vince Walker scored the game's first run in the third on a double play turned by the Cardinals. Junior Tanner Johnson followed with a double down the left line that scored Jack Blanchard, while Phil Papaioannou knocked in Johnson with a base hit through the left side.
Otterbein gone on the board via the long ball in the bottom of the frame. DU responded in their next trip to the plate with three more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from freshman Brian McAuliffe. Mcauliffe's first-career home run also brought home Sam Frazen. Senior Eric Zmuda also drove in Blanchard with a single. Zmuda plated Blanchard for the second time with another base hit in the sixth before an errant throw and a Noah Hahn RBI single in the seventh set the final score.
Blanchard and Papaioannou both went 3-for-5 on the day, while Zmuda, Johnson and Hahn each collected two hits. Blanchard touched the dish three times, while Johnson scored twice. The duo also combined for the Big Red's three stolen bases.
Sophomore John Troll improved to 2-0 on the season after giving up just one run while scattering three hits in five innings of work. Connor Hanrahan surrendered just one hit in the sixth, while Andrew Bruss faced the minimum despite issuing a walk in the seventh. Senior Matthew Zmuda closed out the final two innings, allowing one hit while striking out two.
The Big Red improves to 24-8 with the win, while the loss drops the Cardinals to 23-10. Denison resumes North Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday when they travel to West Division foe Ohio Wesleyan. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1 p.m.
