GREENCASTLE, Ind.--  No. 17 Denison gutted out a 14-12 win over DePauw University in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.  The win foiled the Tigers bid for a four-game sweep.  It also moved the Big Red's record to 19-6 and 5-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.  DePauw won Saturday's opener, 15-5.

In game two, Denison jumped out to an 8-0 lead thanks to four runs in the second and four more in the third.  After Ethan Carlyon led off the second with a single to right, Phil Papaioannou followed with an RBI triple.  Jake Ryder's sac fly brought in Papaioannou and after a Vince Walker walk, Nick Pettigrew blasted a 2-run homer to center.

After two quick outs in the top of the third, Ryder singled, Walker drew another walk and Pettigrew launched a 3-run homer to left-center.  Later in the inning, Tanner Johnson's base hit drove in Eric Zmuda.

DePauw answered with five runs in the bottom of the third, but the Big Red charged right back with another four-spot in the fourth.  It was the same part of the order that continued to do damage as Papaioannou doubled in Carlyon.  Ryder followed with an RBI double and Walker hit a two-run bomb to right.

With Denison leading 12-5, DePauw chipped away with four in the fifth and three in the sixth.  Clinging to a 13-12 lead entering the eighth, Denison plated a big insurance run as Zmuda's sacrifice fly scored Evan Flax who was pinch running for Ryder after he led off the frame with a double.

DePauw brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the eighth but Andrew Bruss got Tate Stewart to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.  Connor Hanrahan came on to work the ninth and got two quick outs.  Pinch hitter Zack Wade worked a walk but Ryan Grippo flew out to center, ending a 3 hour and 36-minute adventure.

Pettigrew was 2-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.  Johnson was 3-for-6 and Papaioannou was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple.  Bruss got the win in relief of Denison starter Cody Mauri.  Bruss pitched 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs.

In the opener, DePauw led 5-3 heading into the sixth inning.  A four-run sixth and six runs in the seventh by the Tigers put an end to the game after seven innings.  Mikey Rivera got the start and suffered the loss.  He allowed three earned runs off four hits in 2.0 innings pitched.

Denison will return to action on Wednesday (April 19) when they take on No. 9 Wooster in a single 9-inning game beginning at 6 p.m.
