GRANVILLE, Ohio--  A seven-run first inning helped Denison get off to a great start against John Carroll University.  Zack Huarte took care of the rest as the Big Red cruised to a 14-1 victory over the Blue Streaks on Opening Day from Big Red Field.

Eric Zmuda led off the game by stretching a single into a double on a rocket to the gap in right-center.  With the bases loaded and one out, Tucker Davison drew a walk, plating the first Denison run.  A wild pitch by starting pitcher Nathaniel Wenson scored Noah Hahn and a groundout by Joseph Maydwell plated Tanner JohnsonSam Frazen doubled to the alley in left-center, scoring Davison and Nick Pettigrew laced a single to left, plating Fazen and Jack Blanchard.  Having batted around, Zmuda got one for good measure with a RBI single up the middle, scoring Pettigrew.

When the dust settled, DU scored seven runs on only four hits. Wenson was pulled with two outs in the first and was relieved by Joseph Franke.  He pitched the next 3.1 innings, scattering five hits and two runs.

Denison put two more runs on the board in the fourth.  Maydwell's single to center moved Johnson to third but the JCU centerfielder dropped the ball as he was fielding Maydwell's hit.  That miscue allowed Johnson to come around and score.  With one out in the inning, after a single by Jack Blanchard, Pettigrew scored Maydwell with a sacrifice fly to right.

Huarte left the game with a 9-1 lead after six innings.  He allowed six hits, one walk and one run that was unearned.  He also struck out a pair while facing 25 batters.  Matthew Zmuda, Andrew Bruss and Connor Hanrahan combined for three innings of scoreless relief to close out the contest.

Johnson, Maydwell, Zmuda, Blanchard and Frazen all had multi-hit games.  Pettigrew led the team in RBIs with three, going 1-for-3 with a walk.  Later in the contest, first-year infielder Jake Ryder notched his first collegiate hit.

Huarte got the win to improve to 4-0 while Wenson suffered the loss, dropping to 0-2.

Denison returns to the diamond on Friday when they travel to Capital University for a 9-inning game slated to start at 4 p.m.  This game was originally scheduled to be played on Monday, March 27 but it was moved due to conflicts with Ohio Athletic Conference scheduling.
