Provost goes the distance in win at Marietta

Perley Provost
Perley Provost

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Denison junior Perley Provost turned in his second-career complete-game performance as the Big Red knocked off Marietta College, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Don Schaly Field. The victory marks Mike Deegan's 100th as head coach of the Big Red and his second-consecutive win over his alma mater.

Offense was the story early in the game as the two teams combined to score at least one run in the first two and a half frames. Junior Tanner Johnson opened the scoring with an RBI single through the left side that scored Eric Zmuda in the first. Mike Hale answered with a base hit down the left line to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. In the second Zmuda and Michael Barnabel produced run-scoring hits to push the score to 2-2 after two.

Denison broke the game open in the third on the strength of two hits and a pair of miscues by the Pioneers. Junior Noah Hahn broke the tie after scoring via an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Phil Papaioannou. Joseph Maydwell extended the lead with a SAC fly to right that scored Johnson from third. Two more runs came across when a potential double play relay was thrown away.

After seeing his offense take the lead, Provost (2-1) went into shutout down mode as he scattered just two hits over the final seven shutout frames. In those final seven innings the junior recorded seven of his eight strikeouts, one of which was a strikeout looking to end the contest. Provost also faced the minimum in the final four frames. In all, he scattered six hits without issuing a free pass.

Zmuda led the offensive charge going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run, while Hahn was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Johnson drove in a run, scored another and swiped a base, while Tucker Davison and Jack Blanchard each stole a bag.

With the win, the Big Red improves to 8-3 on the year while the loss drops the Pioneers to 5-6. Denison will be back in action on Thursday (March 23) when they host John Carroll at Big Red Field in Granville. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
