The eighth-ranked Marietta Pioneers took advantage of five Denison errors en route to an 11-4 victory over the Big Red on Monday at Don Schaly Stadium.
Marietta jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings before breaking the game open with a five-run bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to secure the victory. Of the 11 runs scored by the Etta Express, only five were charged to the DU pitching staff.
Denison broke up the shutout bid in the top of the fourth when a two-out double by Tim Duxbury scored Ryan Mulligan from second base. With one on and no outs in the sixth, sophomore Ryan Loehnert belted his second homer of the season. Loehnert's long ball scored DU's home run leader Kyle Clemmenson, who was standing on first base. The Big Red's final run came in the ninth when pinch hitter Adam Goldstein knocked in Felipe Garcia with his first-collegiate hit.
Duxbury finished with two hits, while Loehnert knocked in a pair of runs. Starter Connor Murphy suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings of work.
Mitch Geers paced Marietta with three hits, three RBIs and two runs, while Chris Winpigler also drove in three on two hits. Mike Finlan improved to 3-0 on the year after giving up three runs on six hits with three Ks and two walks in 5.2 innings.
The Big Red falls to 22-14, while the Pioneers improve to 25-8. Denison returns to action this weekend when they host one of four North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover Series. As the top seed in the NCAC West Division, DU will host the fourth seed in the NCAC East in a three-game series where the winner earns a spot in the NCAC Tournament on May 9-11.
