Big Red bats blast Blue Streaks

Georgie Montes
Georgie Montes hit .500 with 3 RBIs, 2 runs and a stolen base at JCU.

The Denison offense scored a season-high 17 runs and pounded out 20 hits on Wednesday afternoon in University Heights, Ohio.  All that resulted in a dominating 17-4 victory over John Carroll.

Already in front 3-1 after an inning of play, the Big Red broke the game open with a seven-run third frame.  The third-inning onslaught featured seven Denison hits and a pair of Blue Streak errors.  Ryan Mulligan, Lowell Hall, Jake Meegan, Georgie Montes and Kyle Clemmenson all recorded RBI singles in the third.

DU continued the offensive flurry with seven more runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined.  In the fifth, Clemmenson doubled in a run, while Mulligan hit a sacrifice fly to right.  Montes and Mulligan each knocked in a pair in the sixth, while a single to left by Clemmenson scored Montes.

Seven Big Red hitters recorded multiple hits in the win.  Clemmenson and Montes led the charge with four and three hits, respectively.  Clemmenson and Mulligan each drove in four runs, while Montes knocked in three.  Senior Danny Kraus scored four times, while Clemmenson touched the dish three times.  Kyle Colgain, Hall and Montes also crossed the plate twice.  Also logging two hits were Kraus, Mulligan, Colgain, Hall and Charlie Apfelbach.

The sixth-man pitching crew of Colgain, Tim Duxbury, Ian Barry, Connor Murphy, Montes and Ryan Loehnert combined to scatter five hits and strike out nine.  Duxbury (2-1) picked up the win after surrendering an unearned run and striking out three in two innings of work.

Denison improves to 8-8 on the year, while John Carroll falls to 13-8.  The Big Red returns home for a four-game series against the Wittenberg Tigers.  Game one is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
