Havens stymies Big Red offense
Baldwin Wallace pitcher Pat Havens tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout to power the Yellow Jackets to a 5-0 victory over Denison on Saturday in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Havens tossed a gem over the course of nine innings. The senior hurler scattered three hits, issued two free passes and struck out eight batters en route to his third victory of the season. After giving up a one-out walk in the top of the third, Havens retired 17-straight batters. One of those hitters did reach base on an error, but a pickoff at first quickly erased the base runner.
The BW offense backed up the solid outing with five runs of the course of eight frames. Brendan Toughey scored the first, and what proved to be the game-winning run, in the bottom of the first. After leading the inning off with a triple, Toughey came around to score on an RBI ground out to third. The Yellow Jackets also tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.
Freshman Ryan Loehnert picked up his first-career extra-base hit with a double in the second, while Andrew Touhy and Danny Kraus both logged ninth-inning singles. Ian Barry (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits in six innings. Georgie Montes threw the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Chontos, Murphy, Neuschaefer and Alex Green all logged a pair of hits to pace the Baldwin Wallace (10-2) offense, while Gugliotta drove in two of the five Yellow Jacket runs.
At the end of its seven-game spring break trip, the Big Red returns to Ohio with a 2-5 mark. DU opens its home slate on Tuesday when they welcome Muskingum University to Granville. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
