A four-run sixth and another two in the seventh pushed the Denison Big Red past Ohio Northern University, 11-6, on Tuesday night in Granville.
Denison wasted no time as they took a four-run lead after one inning. An Evan Nicholson single coupled with a throwing error allowed Georgie Montes to score the game's first run, while a triple by Tim Duxbury and a base hit by Andrew Mahle resulted in two more tallies. After a stolen base and a fly out allowed Mahle to advance to third base, the senior crossed the dish on a passed ball charged to catcher Cory Martin.
The Polar Bears answered with two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames as they took a 6-5 lead. Senior Tyler Nicholson drew walk to lead off the sixth. With two outs, Ryan Mulligan was hit by a pitch, a play that opened the door for another four-run frame. Duxbury drew free pass to load the bases, while pinch hitter Dave Holmes also drew a base-on-balls to push across a run.
After another sixth inning pitching change by Ohio Northern, Kyle Colgain logged the lone hit of the frame with a single that scored pinch runner Nick Marsit. Justin Vaske earned an RBI after being struck by a pitch, while a balk by reliever Aaron Johnson scored Holmes.
Senior Joro Forman picked up his first-collegiate win after surrendering two runs on two hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. Colgain also went two hitless innings with five strikeouts, while senior Kevin Bratcher closed out the nine, scattering two hits with one K. Starter Hunter Sorensen allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Evan Nicholson, Mulligan, and Duxbury all paced the DU offense with two hits each, while Nicholson and Duxbury and Montes all scored two runs apiece. Nicholson also swiped three bases, while Montes, Baskin, Duxbury and Mahle each logged a stolen base.
Reliever Devon Tantari suffered the loss for the Polar Bears after surrendering three runs in a third of an inning. Mark Hayes logged two hits and scored a run to lead ONU at the dish.
Denison improves to 9-19-1, while Ohio Northern falls to 8-14. The Big Red returns to the diamond on Saturday when they host a four-game series with North Coast Athletic Conference rival Ohio Wesleyan University. Game one of the Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
