The Denison University Department of Athletics recognizes the values of Leadership, Teamwork, Integrity, Diversity, Growth Mindset and Trust as core to our Competitive Excellence.
As such it is an expectation that all Denison representatives display ethical conduct and positive sportsmanship by exhibiting professional behaviors and respect for competition and competitors as is the spirit of Division III. We expect that this will be exhibited through a set of positive behaviors by student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans during athletic competition and daily in our interactions with our shared athletic communities.
These vital behaviors are based on the values of respect and integrity for our competition as well as officials, our support services staff and coaches. There is a guiding principle that each representative of Denison follows the letter and spirit of the rules of the NCAA and the rules of their respective sport. However, the expectation goes beyond merely following rules. There is an expectation that our Denison University representatives reflect a higher standard, one articulated and demonstrated through adhering to our values, this should include a reflection of the fundamental value sportsmanship as represented below:
NCAA Bylaw 2.4 The Principles of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program.
